Anonymous asked:

Is there a name for writer's block but it's at a job? Where one can't put out any meaningful work product due to overwhelm/boredom/frustration and can't communicate this with others and get help, with the ever-present fear of getting fired hanging over one's head?

olderthannetfic answered:

“Burnout”

A piece of advice my dad once gave to me that I feel like a lot of people could benefit from:

"Writer's block is mostly a myth. When a fireman suddenly can't put out fires, no matter how hard he tries, because his brain just won't let him run into burning buildings anymore, we don't call that 'fireman's block', and we don't suggest that he should fix it by waiting around for firefighting inspiration."

What anon is describing is burnout, or possibly depression. But importantly: it's burnout or depression for when it's a job, and it's also burnout or depression for when it's writing. People love to romanticize writing and art and the idea of artistic struggle and the search for inspiration. Please be very careful that when you find yourself "blocked" or "low on inspiration", you're not just buying into an overly romanticized artistic version of what other communities call "low on spoons".
